Manga Review: Alice in Bishounen-Land Volume 1

Alice in Bishounen-Land by Yushi Kawata Art by Yukito

Alice Kagami and her friend Tatami get sucked into the dating simulation game Love Color School Stars and became producers. In order to return to the real world, she must turn her group, 3 Jours and 2 Nuits, into top idol group but the problem is she's totally clueless. Disclaimer: A review copy was provided by the publisher.

Alice members are a mishmash of different personalities: Hanazawa, a half-dog and half human; Julius Paliton III, a spirit; Azuki Tsubufusa, 41-year old teacher who looks like pre-school/midde school kid; Fortress Kyojima, uhmmm a 60-feet giant and Hyoya Sanimiya, he's so tiny you can barely see him on Alice's shoulder on the cover above.

We can see all the guys' affinities for Alice are leveling up but there's an evident lead guy though nothing's that serious yet. (See more of  7 Types of Reverse Harem Endings). And according to the rules, she might end up dating whoever's route she chooses. Kyojima is my favorite just because his size might make you think his role is limited but they come up with creative ways to use this to their advantage. Now, I really want to know if it will become four flowers or just two flowers. (See Levels of Reverse Harem

The story itself is a mix of otome isekai trope meets producer and idol raising meets Alice in Wonderland. The storylines are funny and can be corny or straight-up outlandish but it is intentional and in spirit with the Alice theme. But what makes it really funny is Alice's reaction. Like when she wonders who wrote the half-baked storyline on a majestic scale which is so meta.

This manga has made me come to a realization of the weird good and the weird bad. It's easy to dismiss this as just plain weird in the middle but if you peek closely at the proverbial looking glass it cleverly satirizes the mobile games' gameplay and monetization strategies.

For other weird good titles, I recommend kinda reverse harem anime: Pretty Boy Detective Club and Gugure Kokkuri-San. And as well as The Reincarnated Princess Spends Another Day Skipping Story Routes light novel and Omameda Towako to Sannin no Motootto jdrama. For more Alice-themed reverse harem, clickity boppity boo on the tag. And we have another case of faceless extras or rather eye-less extras. I don't know why I'm keeping tabs on this.

And as if the bunch of off-the-wall characters is not enough a sixth member will arrive in the second and final volume. Let me know if you want me to cover it.
